Sylvan, KS – Wilson Lake – Sunday July 13, 2014 The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with the FLW, the Russell County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the TBF of Kansas hosted the 2014 Student Angler Federation (SAF) KANSAS HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP at Wilson Lake. The state high school championship was a two person team event for students in grades 9-12 and their “coach,” who provided the boat for the competition. The championship began with a mandatory pre-tournament meeting on Saturday evening that was hosted by the Russell County Convention and Visitors Bureau at the Elk’s Lodge in Russell KS. The tournament launched at 6:00AM Sunday morning from the Hell’s Creek boat ramp at Wilson State Park with a 2:00PM weigh that provided the young anglers 8 tournament hours to show their stuff.
“State championships allow every SAF member in North America the opportunity to fish in a championship tournament setting,” TBF National Youth Director, Mark Gintert, stated. “This year, with the help of our partners at FLW, we’re expanding the program again by offering more advancement opportunities based on field size. In 2014, the top 10% of the field will advance. This rewards areas of the country working hard to grow the sport of high school fishing.”
Congratulations to Rock Creek High’s Spencer Bowers, Travis Blenn and their coach Sheldon Rogue from Westmoreland, Ks who took the 1st place hardware with a winning weight of 8.34lbs. Travis and Spenser said that fishing was very slow most of the morning for them, until they pulled up on a magical main lake point and laid the wood to the feeding Bass around mid morning. Spencer and Travis gave all the credit for their success to their coach Sheldon Rogue. The team will move on to represent Kansas is the Southern Regional on the Red River out of Shreveport, LA on 19 October 2014 were they will be competing for a place in the FLW/TBF High School Fishing National Championship that will be held in the spring of 2015 in conjunction with a major TBF or FLW event.

All SAF members nationwide and all open and state championship participants automatically qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2014 High School Fishing World Finals. At the 2013 World Finals, over $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded.

The second place team of Christian Hamel, Holden Jones and Coach Scott Hamel from Stockton High School finished the day with 8.26lbs and a heart breaking story of a 4lb winning fish that they lost at the side of the boat before being able to get her in the net.
